Experience behind the perspective

I speak law.
And code.

Before I became a lawyer, I was a software engineer. I’ve built apps, helped turn copyright law into software, and co-invented patented video surveillance technology.

That experience shapes how I work with clients on software contracts, open-source issues, licensing, and patents: understand how the technology works, then connect the legal advice to the product and the business.

Patents from the inventor’s side.

I’m a co-inventor of video surveillance technology involving image processing and object tracking. My issued U.S. patents, each titled Video surveillance system, include 7,859,564, 7,956,889, and 8,605,155. I bring that experience of developing an invention to my work as a patent attorney.

The Durationator: copyright law in code.

At Tulane, I helped develop the logic representation language and engine for the Durationator, software for analyzing copyright terms worldwide. Professor Elizabeth Townsend Gard’s article about that work was cited by Justice Breyer in his Supreme Court dissent in Golan v. Holder, 565 U.S. 302, 357 (2012).

The first Louisiana Civil Code app for iPhone.

In 2009, I developed and released the first Louisiana Civil Code iOS app, putting a searchable legal reference in lawyers’ pockets. It was a practical way to bring my work in software and law together.
